Now that Basking
Ridge is finally in the throes of winter, many people use
electric space heaters to supplement their homes’ heating
systems. While electric space heaters can make a big difference
in comfort on a cold night, they are also a leading cause of
fires in the home during cold weather. Here are some safety
rules to keep in mind:
Keep electric space heaters at least three feet away from
anything flammable. Do not let furniture, bedding, drapes,
clothing, paper or anything else come into contact with the
space heater.
Keep little hands away! Space heaters are usually kept on the
floor, and children’s curiosity can get the better of them,
resulting in burns. Pets must also be kept away.
Do NOT use extension cords, and do NOT run electrical wires
underneath rugs. Placing anything on top of an electrical cord
can cause it to overheat and cause a fire. Also, if a cord is
damaged or frayed, don’t use it.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Space heaters should be used only on a floor where they won’t
tip over. They should not be placed on rugs or carpets. They
should not be placed on counters or on top of furniture or other
unstable objects.
Do not use space heaters in the bathroom, or any other moist
area.
Basking Ridge’s volunteer fire and EMS personnel stand ready to
respond and help our neighbors in an emergency, but we’d prefer
it if our services aren’t needed!
Keep yourselves and your families safe this winter.
